B.Sc (OT) | OTA BAMH Endorsed Practitioner - Focussed Psychological Strategies | GTIWA Accredited Gestalt Psychotherapist

Welcome.

It takes courage to have made it this far. I would like to introduce myself and briefly tell you a little about who I am, and share some information that I hope may support you in deciding if you and I could be suited to working together.

In 2010 I completed a Bachelor of Science (Occupational Therapy), and gained a pragmatic, systems focussed and holistic grounding to begin work as a specialist mental health clinician. Since then, I have trained in mostly psychodynamic and existential based therapies, completing four years of post graduate supervised gestalt psychotherapy training, and have experience working from CBT, DBT, mindfulness, sensory modulation, somatic and attachment and trauma informed modalities. I have over a decade’s experience working in private practice and government services as a therapist and in roles coordinating specialist individual and group therapy programs, building and managing teams, and providing clinical supervision for clinicians and therapists. I have particular interest and expertise in working with issues around masculinity, sexuality, male identity, transitions, men’s mental health during and following their partners child birth, and fatherhood. I am skilled in working with trauma, depression, anxiety, grief and loss.

Personally, I am drawn to experiences that I find moving and resonant. I have often engaged in adventure and endurance pursuits, in isolation or in partnerships and teams- seeking limits to know my own physicality, pain, elation and exhaustion of bodily experience. I have felt honoured and humbled through witnessing others achieve their goals, and at times fail and become stronger in their defeat. I see therapy as something akin to this- wandering together, seeking through the landscape of our body’s memory’s and current experiences to learn and grow and heal.

The big learnings in small moments, the silent victories when no crowds are there to applaud, the incredible capacity of the human spirit to endure, and the synergy of multiple systems working to achieve an outcome that no one could have imagined, all keep me inspired. Experiencing these journeys with others personally and professionally, has taught me about the human body’s innate capacity to do extraordinary things, particularly to heal and grow. My curiosity towards experience is deeply alive. It drives my interest in knowing myself, and resourcing others towards awareness of their own experience.

These days, I spend most of my free time nurturing a wild, young family with my inspiring partner in the natural surrounds of the Southwest. This brings with it its own endurance, exhaustion, grieving and challenge, as well as beauty and depth, in a dynamic and different way to working with teams in organisations or being lost running mountains and paddling rivers. I have been humbled by my own defeats and failures, and from brushing up against limits and hard choices. The life and energy of wild places strike a deep chord within my being and I often find inspiration and exhaustion amongst my own learning and growth in these spaces.

Megan Archer

B.Sc (OT) | OTA BAMH Endorsed Practitioner - Focussed Psychological Strategies | Hakomi Mindfulness-Based Somatic Psychotherapy LV1, LV2

Welcome.

Before I introduce myself as a therapist, I would like to introduce myself first and foremost as a partner and mother as I believe that my humanness and direct life experience informs an important part of my therapeutic style. I invest much of my time and energy nurturing and learning in these relationships, and find support and grounding in the natural spaces in the beautiful south-west Australia where I live with my family. I also enjoy being creative and immersing myself in the process of making natural products, tinkering with aromatherapy, and having a bit of time to play artistically with paint and charcoal when I am feeling inspired.

My qualifications and experience in mindfulness-based somatic psychotherapy and occupational therapy have equipped me with robust skills in holistic assessment and supportive intervention that recognises and appreciates the individual wisdom and healing potential that all people possess. They have also humbled me to witness time and again the incredible transformation that happens when people are met with presence, safety and intention in the therapeutic relationship. I am experienced providing therapy for individuals and groups, utilising CBT, DBT, sensory modulation, focussed psychological strategies and psychodynamic approaches.

I have always had a curiosity about the ways in which physical, sensory cognitive, spiritual, and environmental elements interact so intricately within people and our wider society. It was this interest of mine that led me to train and work in the WA public mental health system as an occupational therapist, with occupational therapy being a unique profession that appreciates and considers all of these aspects in a holistic way to support people to engage in meaningful life roles, relationships and activities. As my passion for the work continued to evolve, I decided to complete post-graduate studies in the field of mindfulness-based somatic psychotherapy. This type of psychodynamic therapy training deepened my therapeutic skills and provided me with rich experience and understanding about how to gently, mindfully recognise and utilise the information that a person's body holds when participating in the healing process. It also further expanded and built upon my knowledge in the area of neuroscience and its applications to therapy, particularly when working safely and effectively with trauma. Upon completion of further extensive supervised practise and assessment of my skills, I became endorsed by Occupational Therapy Australia as a Mental Health Endorsed Practitioner with Medicare, recognising my expertise in the delivery of focussed psychological strategies as a mental health clinician.

My therapeutic approach is gentle, curious and holistic. I firmly believe that all people have the capacity to heal when given the optimal conditions, and will follow and lead as you need and at your own pace. I believe that the therapeutic process unfolds organically and more deeply when resistance is met with support and curiosity, and value the information that is held in these places about what you might need to feel safe. Therefore, I am also intentional about building resources to support you throughout the therapy process and in your daily life. I enjoy using mindfulness as both a tool and as an attitude to hold in therapy.

I am experienced and comfortable working with a wide range of mental health conditions and difficulties, and also welcome working with you if you are merely curious about getting to know yourself more deeply as you journey through your life. I have a particular interest in working with people who are navigating the journey of conception, pregnancy, birth and parenthood, and have my own personal appreciation of the contradiction and paradox that can be both so destabilising and fruitful throughout these experiences. I am also interested in supporting women navigating trauma and issues around sexuality, as well as parents who are experiencing difficulties in their role as a co-parent.
